1930'da New York'da doğdu. Colombia üniversitesi'nden mezun oldu (1951); aynı üniversitede master (1954) ve doktora yaptı (1959). Columbia'nın Sosyoloji bölümünde (1958-71) ve McGill Üniversitesi'nde sosyoloji okuttu (1971-76). 1976'dan bu yana, New York Üniversitesi'nin Binghamton'daki bölümünde "seçkin sosyoloji profesörü" ve aynı yerdeki "Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems, and Civilizations" adlı enstitünün müdürüdür. Uluslararası Afrika Enstitüsü'nün altı yıl (1978-84) İdare Heyeti üyeliğini yapan Wallerstein, 1975 yılında Sorokin ödülüne layık görüldü.
